Rannsóknastöðin hefur sett upp síritandi þörungamæli við útfall Mývatns
til að fylgjast með svifþörungum í vatninu. Mælirinn er mjög fullkominn og
getur greint á augabragði á milli nokkurra helstu þörungaflokka, t.d.
grænþörunga (græn lína), kísilþörunga (gul lína) og blágrænna þörunga. Á meðfylgjandi mynd sést vel hve mikil áhrif stormurinn um daginn hafði á þörungamagnið í vatninu. Þá gruggaðist mikið af þörungum upp af botninum. Svarta línan sýnir heildarmagn þörunga.
The Myvatn Research Station has mounted a device in the lake outlet that
registers the amount of planktonic algae in the water, divided into all
the major algae groups such as green algae, diatoms, blue-green algae etc.
Here is a screenshot showing the effect of the storm the other day on the
algae. A large amount of bottom living microalgae were stirred up in the
water due to the storm.
