Þessa dagana er dálítið af rykmýi að kvikna í Mývatni. Mýpúpurnar fljóta til yfirborðs þar sem flugan skríður úr púpuhýðinu á örfáum sekúndum og flýgur upp. Gegnsætt púpuhýðið verður eftir í vatnsskorpunni. Hér er nærmynd af hýðum sem flutu á vatninu í gær. Minni hýðin eru af tegundinni Psectrocladius barbimanus (vatnsmý) en hin stærri og dekkri af Chironomus islandicus (toppmý). Báðar tegundir eru eftirsóttar af matgæðingum í hópi fugla og fiska.
Midges are emerging from the lake Mývatn these days. The pupae float to the surface where the fully developed flies creep out of their transparent pupal skins which are left on the water. This close-up from yesterday shows the skins of two species, the smaller one is Psectrocladius barbimanus, the other is Chironomus islandicus. Both species feature high in the diet of fish and waterfowl.
